I opened my email today to find an interesting video from Penn State Industries. The video is titled, “Metal Spinning – Create Beautiful Metal Projects on your Wood Lathe” and is pretty intriguing right off the bat. They are selling a new system, complete with instructional dvd, that shows the turner how to spin metal disks in a number of new projects, things from simple aluminum cups to fancy brass lanterns. They teamed up with metal spinner Terry Tynan to offer a new product line specifically for metal spinning. Take a look below.

The start kit can be found here. Pretty pricey at $299.

Bob Hamilton posted a nice tutorial of a lidded box made of walnut and maple. After mounting the walnut he turns the center recess then dresses the edges with a rabbet. He crafts a lid of maple, by turning the lid and knob separately. For the lid he uses flat jaws
to hold the piece.

Bob Hamilton created a short tutorial on making a custom band clamp for special projects that need more than a standard two dimensional clamp
. He uses a hose clamp
as the tightening mechanism and galvanized strapping
for the band.

Bob Hamilton wrote a nice tutorial on making segmented clocks utilizing a homemade band clamp.
He starts by cutting the segmented pieces for the rim of the clock. After ensuring a tight fit he glues the segments together with a custom band clamp. He creates two rings that sandwich a maple center and a piece of plywood backing to hold the clock mechanism.
To get started you’ll need to get a few tools and materials.

Bob Hamilton produced another tutorial on turning a Potpourri Container but with a new twist, a square face. For this article he picked a few pieces of contrasting wood, a piece of black walnut sandwiched between two pieces of cherry. He used a similar technique as his other tutorial by utilizing a series of steps that build on each other to produce the final Potpourri holder. He sanded the piece down to 400 grit and then applied Salad Bowl Finish. The final product is a unique piece that would make a perfect gift.
